Uganda Gender and Energy Alliance 2009-2010 Final Seed Funding Report

This project aimed to provide an opportunity for members of the Gender and Energy Alliance-Uganda to mainstream gender in three of the energy enterprises in Uganda. The energy enterprises include: one company dealing with ceramic stoves, another with small solar systems and the third working on charcoal briquettes. Despite the work done in business development, the members of the Gender and Energy Alliance realized the enterprises had not been able to build capacity for considering gender concerns as priority in their work. As such the energy enterprises were lacking skills and knowledge on how to work towards addressing gender inequalities. The goal of this project was to work towards making gender a key factor in improving effectiveness of the value chain of energy enterprises that enable increased access to energy services to women and men. Beyond the support for the energy enterprises the network also undertook capacity building activities through workshops.

Key objectives:

  • To use gender focused knowledge and skills in ways that enhance capacity of members to champion gender mainstreaming in energy projects for increased effectiveness of energy service provision to females and males.
  • To enhance networking of members to support utilisation and sharing of knowledge for improved gender mainstreaming in planning and project implementation.
  • Gender and energy capacity building.

 Key results:

  • Gender mainstreaming strategies were developed for the three energy enterprises.
  • The strategies were implemented in the three enterprises with coaching support from the Gender Mainstreaming Team of the Gender and Energy Alliance-Uganda.
  • The needs assessment and the ensuing development and implementation of a gender mainstreaming strategy for three energy micro-enterprises has been captured in three case studies.
  • On 29 June and 6 July 2010 capacity building sessions took place in ‘Planning for Gender Mainstreaming in Energy Projects within EAETDN Thematic Groups’. The sessions were organized by and for members of the Gender and Energy Alliance.
  • Creation of gender and energy information packages and information dissemination.

Lessons learned:

  • Team work of the members enables sharing of skills and learning from each other.
  • Availability of funds through the intermediary, ENERGIA enabled members to work on specified activities in ways that contributed to skills acquisition and practice.
