Training Course on Mainstreaming Gender Concerns in Energy Projects.
when the training workshop was held ENERGIA partnered with the Renewable Energy Association of Swaziland (REASWA) to deliver a workshop focusing on gender and energy issues. The workshop lasted 5 days and was attended by 12 participants representing different stakeholders involved in energy projects: government, private sector and academia.
The workshop objectives were:
- To build capacity for project developers and managers to mainstream gender in energy projects.
- To equip Project managers and developers with the necessary tools needed to mainstream gender into energy projects.
- Development of action plans on how project managers can mainstream gender concerns into energy projects.
- To share experiences on how other project managers and implementers have applied gender mainstreaming tools into their projects
The workshop started by introducing participants to basic concepts, progressed to the study of tools and the ENERGIA framework for mainstreaming gender into energy projects and culminated in the development of action plans for the mainstreaming of gender into energy programs within the participant’s respective organizations.
In August 2009 a follow up workshop took place with the primary goal of assessing progress on the action plans designed in the original workshop, and to share information on the mainstreaming activities. A total of 6 action plans was presented ranging from programs that were still in early planning phases, and up to programs that were successfully completed. Some of the challenges observed during the presentation of the action plan status were:
- Lack of consistency in presentation of the action plans.
- Most participants had some challenges when presenting gender goals.
- Lack of indicators in the status reports.
