Gender and Energy Network of South Africa: National training Workshop on Gender and Energy Safety, 2010

ENERGIA partnered with GERT (Gender and Energy Research and Training) to perform the South African national training workshop on ‘mainstreaming gender concerns into energy projects’. The workshop was  held on 15–19 March 2010. The workshop had a total of 15 participants selected from low-income areas of the two South African provinces, namely Western Cape and Gauteng.

Seed Funding for Gender and Energy Network South Africa (GENSA), 2011

The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), the First national focal point for the Gender and Energy Network South Africa (GENSA), actively implemented seed-funding activities with support from ENERGIA with the aim to revive and strengthen the Network. This report summarizes the activities taking place in 2011.

Network Goals 

To mobilize and work with people from grass roots organizations such as NGOs, governments departments, private companies and all energy service providers to enhance gender mainstreaming in all the energy projects and programs in South Africa.

Activities

Although not funded by ENERGIA but receiving support through being affiliated to the ENERGIA network, outstanding projects are:

  • Work on climate change, gender and energy which has been presented in the CSD 15 to 17 meetings in New York, putting South Africa on the map in climate change and gender issues.
  • Work on rural women and biofuels funded by SANERI and emphasizing work on gender mainstreaming in the biofuels sector in Southern Africa.
  • Mobilizing low-income communities through research and implementation of local energy services to raise awareness in energy safety.
