The Women Mini-truck Drivers of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA)

This case study examines the integration of women truck drivers into the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA). LAWMA is statutorily charged with Waste Management in Lagos State. LAWMA is a gender friendly organization which ensures that there is relative balance in the employment opportunities for men and women. The management team of LAWMA has 31% representation of women in both administrative and technical cadres. The agency introduced the female drivers scheme to create employment for women. The policy thrust in LAWMA is to constantly encourage workers to set their agenda as it is of the opinion that whatever a man can do, a woman can also do, even better. Thus, the focus of the agency is not just gender balancing but also the ability of employees to deliver on their mandate.
