National Training Workshop on Mainstreaming Gender in Energy Policies and Programmes in Nigeria

A three-day National Training Workshop on mainstreaming gender concerns into energy policies and programmes was organized by Friends of the Environment (FOTE) with funding from ENERGIA. The training workshop brought together 17 participants comprising Directors and top planners from the planning departments of ECN, Federal Ministry of Women Affairs, NYSC and Federal Ministry of Environment, and a NGO representative. The training consisted of 10 technical sessions, 6 of which involved individual and group exercisesto enable the particpants to practice what they learnt from the sessions.

The main outcomes of the workshop were:

  • Development of a workable action plan modified from the gender action plan developed from the validation workshop of the Gender Audit of the National Energy Policy held in 2008.
  • The commitments of the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of ECN, Prof. A.S. Sambo to ensure that:
    • ECN involves FOTE-ENERGIA in mainstreaming gender in subsequent review of the     National Energy Policy and
    • The communiqué of the workshop is used to expedite gender mainstreaming in ECN
  • A workshop communiqué for engaging relevant government agencies
  • In March 2011 a follow up session to the workshop took place. The meeting consisted of 4 technical sessions which involved individual experience sharing and a group exercise to identify priorities and develop a road map for implementing the action plan from the National Training Workshop.
