Strengthening Gender and Energy Networking in Botswana
In 2003 ENERGIA assisted in the creation of the Gender and Energy Network of Botswana (GENBO). In 2010 Energia seed funded a project to strengthen the network and partnered with Botswana Technology Centre (BOTEC) to implement the project. The main activities within the project time frame included recruitment of new member; a workshop on gender and energy issues; and the writing of two research papers.
Key objectives:
- Network strengthening
- Policy influencing
- Capacity building
- Research
Key results:
- 56 new members joined the GENBO network. GENBO Nights event was a networking event central in achieving this result.
- Development of funding proposal for the Segoditshane Women’s group.
- A workshop on gender and energy issues bringing together stakeholders from government, private sector and NGOs took place. Focus was on policy design for gender and energy mainstreaming.
- Two research papers on gender and energy issues were written: 1) Type of Businesses and Energy Use in Businesses Owned by Women and Men in Gaborone and Surrounding Areas,2) Study to Identify Energy Use and Constraints in Male and Female Headed Households in Poor Urban Areas in Botswana.
Lessons learned:
- The network should enhance its status to that of a Non Government Organisation so that it could further compete for funding from donors globally.
- It is recommended that other ENERGIA networks undertake research as part of their activities as research results are important if we are to convince policy makers.
