Kenya: mainstream gender in efficient wood stoves and biogas projects
Some facts:
- Electrification rate: 15% of population has access.
- Clean Household Energy Dissemination and Enterprise Development Project, a 4-year project (January 2007 – December 2010) by SCODE.
- Project promotes appropriate techs to reduce indoor air pollution.
- Solar photovoltaics systems for lighting, solar cookers, solar water heaters, biogas systems, improved cook stoves (including ovens, chimneys and smoke hoods).
- Implementation in Rift Valley and Central Provinces with population of 10 million.
- 85% of households depend on fuelwood for cooking.
- Gender mainstreaming project efforts focus on the dissemination of improved stoves (maendeleo) for cooking and heating within rural households.
- Gender mainstreaming to incorporate gender in energy service audits, integrate gender into logical framework, develop partner capacity to mainstream, institutionalise results in other SCODE projects.
- Estimated demand for stoves: 55,000. Project to work with 130 small- and medium-scale enterprises to achieve dissemination of 7500 stoves per year.
