What we do
ENERGIA-Africa works to mainstream gender into energy policies, programmes and projects in Africa. We believe that when gender issues are explicitly addressed in energy policies and programmes, better outcomes will be achieved in terms of the sustainability of energy services as well as human development opportunities available to both women and men. The purpose of the Network is to empower women through the integration of gender and energy into policies and programmes of government institutions, NGOs, knowledge institutions, multi- and bilateral donors and private companies.
Gender mainstreaming has been defined by the United Nations Economic and Social Council as ‘a strategy for making women’s as well as men’s concerns and experiences an integral dimension of the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the policies and programmes in all political, economic and societal spheres so that women and men benefit equally and inequality is not perpetuated’.
